>> good evening. >> it is our first real heat wave of the summer season for the second day straight baltimore city is under a code red. >> alert means potentially dangerous conditions for the el kerl and people who have to work outside. john joins us live from north baltimore with the latest on the heat wave. john? >>reporter: well the sweltering conditions have resulted in some marked train delay this afternoon on the brunswick and camden line and thousands of other baltimore people day 2 of code red has resulted in plenty of misery. for most of this summer those who earn their leaving outside have been spared. but crews working on northern parkway knew this day would come. the sweltering heat is taking it's toll. >> you are going to cut off work early today. >> yes. >>reporter: because of the heat. >> it's too hot. too much for my guys. >>reporter: city cooling center on york road and go van. >> we are on our last case right now. >>reporter: hottest commodity

baltimore. they will be open until 7 tonight and tomorrow from 9 to 7 and you can call 311 to find out where the nearest cooling center is to you. we also have a complete list of cooling center locale on our web site go there and click on news link. >> now if you think today is bad, brace yourself for tomorrow. vytas joins us now to tell us just how hot it is out there and how hot it is going to get. >> blistering heat out there at this time. try to stay in the shade if caught out doors or get in doors where there is air conditioning because it is very uncomfortable at this time and we have another hot day on the way around the corner but today is the pinnacle of the heat as we go through the afternoon hours. looking at the situations going on writ now heat advisory across the central portion of the state including washington, d.c, baltimore, eastern shore until 8:00 o'clock tonight and then we also have just to the north of us excessive heat warning to the north over in parts of 92 delaware and then into new jersey because they have all the larger areas with a lot of

heat that is concentrated there looking at 96 degrees downtown baltimore. 95 washington, d.c. currently 91 in salsbury and then you mix that humidity in there it feels like 100 degrees downtown baltimore. 101 in dc. looking at fredericksburg. hot spot. 111. that is the heat index right now. hagerstown index of 99 and over in salsbury looking at 100. dover at 104. so very, very uncomfortable conditions if you didn't have to be out doors, just try to take it easy indoors. now we have some showers and thunderstorms erupting back to the westover towards cumberland. heat humidity firing up some showers and thunderstorms that will probably work their way into the baltimore area as we go through the next hour and a half or so. very strong line of storms newspaper northwestern portions of pennsylvania actually tornadoes warnings in this line of storms right now active and we'll continue to see the line here that is moving to western maryland making its washington i into the metro area in the next hour and a half. so looks like tonight expect to see

mostly cloudy skies. temperatures to 83. still hazy and humid with chance for some thunderstorms scattered in the year so be prepared for that. but nonetheless that 83 is actually feeling good compared to theness. looks like we see another day of 90's tomorrow.i'll tell you when we get a break from the heat in the 7 day forecast. >> all right thank you. the burning debate over health care reform heats up again tonight with another town hall beating. this one with senator card happening in towns end. keith is there live tonight with the story. keith? >>reporter: we are live at townsend university outside of the cap land concert hall. now the event is scheduled to kick at about 7:00 o'clock. doors open at 6:00 and people are already arriving and leaning up. now senator card has ground rules. seating first come first serve. hall capacity is 500. there are e-mails or question in advance and no one will be allowed to take their signs inside the

building. all of this in the wake of some protestors shouting down lawmakers and other chaos at town hall meetings across the country. and tonight some create he can say card rule are an attempt to control or silence opponent of the democratic health care proposal. >> this is a town hall meeting. not a rally. when i have a rally everything is fair game. trying to get a point across. political rally that's political. this is not. this is a purpose for people to be able to come and get information and to express their views. that's what we are going to do we are not going to let a few try to change what the majority want. >>reporter: we are back here live. you can see where the line is extending. to the street here. people on both sides of the issue are lined up on both sides of the street. also now the senator spoke and says those advance question that is were submitted will not be screened. she says card simply wants to read 3 or 4 of those questions to start the discussion. of course more on

you think of the health care plan. you can get the phone numbers and e-mail addresses by logging on to fox baltimore.com slash your voice. in other news of the day now. barricade situation in northeast baltimore ends with one person under arrest. 2 men robbed gas station in 5900 block of belaire road earlier today. the men fled the scene this morning barricaded themselves in a home in the 4300 block of mary avenue. 94-year-old man who lives in the house was inside at the time. now police were able to free him. one suspect was taken into custody. second suspect got away. man was shot and killed last night in south baltimore. police found the victim lying on the ground in the 600 block of cherry hill road. taken to shock trauma where he died. police have two people currently in custody. how are the roads looking tonight. kandace has the traffic edge report. >> thanks jennifer. we are checking in on the average speeds and so far pretty decent ride on most of the main line. check it out. 56 miles per hour on 95 through the white marsh area. it does

>> fears on fox now baltimore city latest greatest hotel becomes the target of vandalism. crime justice reporter joy joins us with the latest on the story tonight. joy. >> the vandalism occurred at the hilton baltimore. a hotel with a bird eye view of camden yard. opened about a year ago. publicly financed facility with more than 700 rooms inside it. over the weekend of july 25 someone did serious damage to the facility flooding it destroying carpet and drywall in the process. it happened as thousands of visitors were in town for a soccer match. but there was also another event wrapping up that weekend. firehouse expo. which brought hundreds of firefighters to the city. >> some person or persons unknown but who knew what they

were doing managed to turn a valve in a pipe in a stairwell and that caused damage few weeks ago. >>reporter: we found a number of postings on popular message board often used by firefighters calling for people total boycott baltimore as well as that expo. also learned chief black expressed concern over what happened. taking a closer look at that angle of the story tonight at 10:00. this is news at 5:30. testing of the h1n1 vaccine begins in baltimore. university of maryland school of medicine is the lead center for the nationwide vaccine trials. over the next week hundreds of healthy adults will get their first of several shots of the swine flu vaccine. today was day one. >> i just want to be able to help. so that if the vaccine has any kind of reaction on my system, you know, it could help someone else.

>> time is ticking down until flu season and doctors have hoping to have the vaccine ready to protect the public by october. hazy hot and humid. all 3 plaguing baltimore today and tomorrow. vytas is here to tell us when we will get some relief from the heat. vytas. >>reporter: not until the middle of the week. we are stuck with the heat for another couple days. heat advisory across the metro year and cooling in baltimore city and county and surrounding area until 8:00 o'clock tonight. that includes the earn shore. excessive heat warning to the north of us as we see the scorching temperatures in the mid upper 90's that's what the temperature is right now but it will 10 to feel pretty uncomfortable when you mix the humidity in there. 96 in baltimore. 95 in dc. 92 in hagerstown. eastern shore at salsbury at 91 degrees. mexico the humidity in with th that, that is heat index. 100 degrees. what it feels like on your skin outside. 101 in dc. 111 in fredericksburg.

that's what it feels like right now. then over across the bay salsbury at 100 degrees. 104 in dover so very uncomfortable. dangerous conditions. if you don't have to be outside for long periods of time. go inside. take it easy with air conditioning and drink plenty of water. we have some storms off to the west firing up on hd radar. moving through western maryland. cumberland heavy thunderstorm activity we see a lot of activity pushing out of the ohio river valley in the midwest. great lakes will 10 to see the testimony push through this lean right here will probably make it into the baltimore area in the next hour and a half to 2 hours. so we'll probably get some decent rainfall across the area briefly with light new england strike as well. we can see the light new england west of cumberland as the system pushes to the east. temperatures will feel like tonight down to 83 degrees. chance for showers and thunderstorms with westerly wind at 5 to 10.i'll take a lock at when we get a little brake from the heat coming up in my 7 day forecast in a few moments. hottest team in tv movie

line of showers make its way into the baltimore metro area over the course of the next hour and a half. behind that there is stronger storms up over parts of northwestern pennsylvania about move into the south western portion just north of pittsburgh. they get north of pittsburgh. they get some heavy thunderstorms
